Bound: Utah & Idaho |
Day Two: We got up and enjoyed the complimentary Holiday Inn Express breakfast before driving down 500 feet into the canyon at Centennial Waterfront Park for a view of Snake River and Perrine Bridge (1500 foot-long bridge over the Snake River which was the highest bridge when it was built in 1927). We then drove about 30 miles to view the Balance Rock (over 48 feet tall and 40 tons of wind carved rock that balances on a 3 feet by 17 inches pedestal). Next we visited the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument (most famous for the Hagerman Horse that is Idaho's state fossil) and took an auto tour of the surrounding lands which included parts of the Emigrant & Oregon Trails (where earlier pioneers crossed on their way to Oregon & California. Made our way back to Twin Falls to visit the Visitor Center and for lunch. Also spotted the launch pad for Evil Knievel's attempt to cross the Canyon on a customized Harley in 1974). Finally crossed back into Utah and our first stop was Antelope Island (the largest island in the Great Salt Lake and now home to a huge herd of bison). Tested the saltiness of the Great Salt Lake before heading on to the Residence Inn Cottonwood for our second night.
